"AN ENEMY CALLED AVERAGE” – JOHN L. MASON

Knowledge is a threat to ignorance, a beautiful threat at that- Motolani.

I have read a few of John Mason’s books, and one of the things that stand out to me every time is his approach.  John is an international speaker who has partnered with the Lord by inspiring millions of people across the globe to reach their God-given potential.  Whether you enjoy reading or not, you can be sure that John’s an enemy called average will have you turning page by page.

The 185-page book is divided into three sections.  Each section carries or delivers its own lessons, so you know that they serve different purposes.  In introducing the book, John said,

I don’t know about you, but I hate to read books that take twenty pages to make one point.  I want to give you twenty points on one page

That is precisely what he delivers. It’s hard to be bored while reading this book because each page is filled with valuable lessons that you could spend hours meditating on a page. What’s more?  One chapter is between two and four pages!

The book’s core message is “looking inward, outward, and upward.” I believe these to be searching within oneself, learning from our daily interactions with others, and resting easy in God (trusting that he’s the answer, not the problem).  For each chapter in the book, John has collected wisdom nuggets from several authors through the ages- this will arouse your curiosity and challenge your mind, soul, and purpose.

Noteworthy is also the way John titles the chapters.  The author is not a small player in creativity.  The titles suggest that he likes to challenge himself and his readers while allowing for a fun read.  Like the caption on the cover says,

The truths in this book can be hazardous to areas of mediocrity in your life.

Recently, I realized that reading a good book like seeing a good movie is not a “once and for all” affair.  Like the scriptures enjoins, “… give attendance to reading… (1 Tim 4:13) and we must do it repeatedly until the values reach home and we have gleaned as much as we can.

“An enemy called average” is a war against mediocrity, and you’d find it insightful and eye-opening. I hope you enjoy this read as much as I did.  The next one is from one of the greatest Christians to have ever lived, the man Watchman Nee.  My palms are itching to write to you soonest.

Until then,

Love always.
